THE launch of the latest Fiesta was a significant milestone for Ford.
It has been described as the most important global vehicle project since the Model T and has heralded the way all future Ford products would be developed.
From the outset it was designed and developed to be a world car - on sale from Western and Eastern Europe to North America, China, Australia and South Africa.
The Fiesta is available in three or five door body styles with five trim levels and with a choice of three petrol engines - 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6-litre - as well as turbodiesels in 1.4 and 1.6-litre units.
The latest addition to the range is a Durashift automatic transmission model mated to a 1.4-litre 95bhp Duratec petrol engine.

Superminis don"t need big engines and the 1.4-litre petrol fits the bill perfectly.
It serves up a useful 95bhp, feels quite sparky at high revs but is very flexible, even with an auto-shifter, when tackling a steep incline or overtaking on the motorway. Its fun through bends, and there"s lots of grip and body control so it changes direction with a poise that I don"t think any other supermini can match.
wholesale colthingThe steering, too, is a joy. It"s quick, accurate and packed with feel.
Absorbing bumps is not a problem either, even with all the pot- holes left after this winter"s Arctic freeze.
Its body control means there"s none of the bounce that"s present in many rivals. Road and wind noise is well suppressed too.
Inside, there"s masses of flair. The design of the centre console is inspired by mobile phone keypads.
The heater controls are set lower down but the large dials are easy to find and select. In fact, most of the switchgear is chunky and easy to use.
To help make yourself comfortable behind the wheel, the Fiesta has two-way steering adjustment and a driver"s seat that can be cranked up and down.
There"s plenty of room front and back for six-foot passengers and there"s also a decent sized boot. the boot opens high so loading and unloading items after a trip to Ikea won't be a problem. The back seats can be folded forward to increase load space but they lie at an awkward angle rather than folding flat, which is a pity.
Wide windows around the Fiesta give off a feel of airiness, and with doors that open wide , entering and exiting is a cinch. But the doors feel pretty light and you hear a hollow 'clunk' every time the doors are slammed shut.
pandora charmsWith our stop-start British motoring conditions the desire to have a car fitted with an automatic gearbox is definitely getting stronger. It takes the stress and wear and tear out of driving if, like me, you spend lots of time behind the wheel.
Given the shortage of space on our roads, particularly around the big cities, and the difficulties of parking, the automatic compact Fiesta seems like an ideal combination.
Officially, the Fiesta auto will return 43.4mpg on average. In real life conditions during my week with the test car, in Titanium trim, I came up with just under 37mpg for a combinat
